Exclusive design preview – and a world first in the kitchen
Visitors to Swiss furniture and fitting manufacturer peka’s stand will learn how their furniture choices influence the quality and functionality of their space. The sleek design of peka’s unit and shelf systems lends kitchens, living areas, bedrooms, dressing rooms and offices a touch of understated elegance.
peka has come up with an eye-catching design for its booth at Interzum 2017: a backlit fabric wall and a collection of simple black cubes give it the appearance of a city skyline at night. The stand is made by known Swiss designer Stephan Hürlemann. But the surprises only really start when the ‘skyline’ unfolds to reveal what is inside: the sheer variety of pull-out systems offered by peka is sure to astound any visitor who opens the unit doors. The stand’s dark backdrop really makes the anthracite, white, wooden and coloured fittings pop, while the unit interiors have been selected carefully to complement the colours and materials used.
Alongside its colourways Libell Anthracite and Libell White, peka is showcasing the full palette of options available as part of its new design line Fioro. Solid oak, glass, painted wood, Alucobond®, walnut... all of these options will be on display for visitors to see.
Interzum Award winner 2017 «best of the best»
With Fioro, you can have outstanding design on the inside of your kitchen units too. Fioro pull-out shelves are crafted from a single piece of top-quality coated sheet metal, ingeniously combined with railing inserts to make for an eye-catching effect. After picking up both a Reddot Design Award and an IF Design Award, Fioro has also secured the Best of the Best quality label in the Intelligent Material & Design category of the 2017 Interzum Design Award.
Fioro – Front panels, units and fittings form a harmonious whole
Many kitchens open onto living areas, so it is more important than ever before to choose the right materials and surfaces for the kitchen. With Fioro, users can have outstanding design on the inside of their kitchen and living room furniture too. Fioro shelves have already won several awards. Their solid oak, glass or aluminium rails blend seamlessly with wooden front panels and a broad palette of colours.
Thanks to Fioro, there are no more limits on creativity in kitchen design. Fioro shelves are crafted from a single piece of top-quality coated sheet metal, ingeniously combined with railing inserts to make for an eye-catching effect. Users can choose to pair the shelves with railings made of solid oak, which are the perfect complement to wooden front panels and warm colours, or, alternatively, they may opt for glass, compact laminates, aluminium, or any other material.
The pull-out shelf’s neat, precise joins showcase its high production quality, while its slim walls give it a sleek, modern twist reminiscent of contemporary architectural trends. The railing inserts and coordinating non-slip mats can easily be removed for cleaning.
Fioro pull-out shelves are designed for units between 150 and 900 mm wide. When developing the line, Swiss manufacturer peka paid special attention to ensuring the product would have a long life. Sandra Weber Blättler, Deputy CEO, explains: “Fioro’s simple, understated design gives it a timeless appearance and the shelves stand out through the quality and precision of their manufacturing. Moreover, the materials can be combined in different ways to create a whole new look.” Fioro’s design quality soon drew the eye of leading international design experts: so far, 2017 has seen Fioro net a Reddot Design Award and an IF Design Award. On top of that, Fioro was awarded the Best of the Best quality label in the Intelligent Material & Design category of the Interzum Design Award 2017.
pecasa – Smart furniture solution combining elegant design with impressive flexibility
Pecasa is peka’s latest shelf system: it consists of a few simple, but highly versatile components that can be combined in an infinite variety of ways. The system is built around a central column to which shelves and storage boxes can be attached in any configuration the user wants. Its stylish design and outstanding flexibility make Pecasa a winning solution for living areas, offices, bedrooms, dressing rooms and public spaces.
Pecasa opens up a world of possibilities for furnishing rooms: users can choose whether to kit out the central column with steel shelves, storage boxes or shelf supports, and if they opt for shelf supports, they can ask their joiner to fit them with wooden or glass inlays, depending on their own personal preferences.
With its clean, linear design and extremely easy assembly, Pecasa is the perfect addition to any room. A number of ingenious details set the system apart, as Sandra Weber Blättler, Deputy CEO of manufacturer peka-metall AG, explains: “Take, for instance, the cable tidy that is built into the central profile. It is big enough to take all the cables from the lighting system, TV, stereo system and other devices and hide them away out of sight. No more jumbles of cables cluttering up furniture surfaces – Pecasa offers a smart furniture solution to the problem.”
Smart furniture – a simple system with sophisticated features
But that is not Pecasa’s only standout feature. If they so desire, users can fit a lighting system to the shelves: each shelf – which, it goes without saying, can be positioned wherever the user wants – can be connected to a low-voltage cable in the cable tidy using special terminals. The muted LED light along the shelves creates a pleasant ambiance in any room.
Pecasa can be customised with a variety of sheet metal accessories. Sandra Weber Blättler lists some of the options: “We have clothes rails, hook rails, trouser racks and shoe shelves for dressing rooms and wardrobes – these are a smart, practical way of storing clothes and shoes. And you could mount a mirror, picture, TV or screen on the wall support.” Not to mention bookshelves, storage boxes, smart furniture boxes or toolboxes, all of which are made of sheet metal and are available in two of the latest must-have colours, burgundy and moss green. The system itself is available in anthracite and white.

It is built around a central column containing a concealed cable tidy: shelves and accessories like clothes rails, television wall mounts and much, much more can be fixed to the column in any configuration. With its clean, linear design, Pecasa is an elegant and practical addition to any room.
Freezyboy – A world first in practical organic waste bins: no more unpleasant odours
Before now, anyone who wanted to avoid unpleasant odours and swarms of fruit flies in their kitchen had no choice but to empty their organic waste bins regularly and store them outside the kitchen. But a Lucerne-based Swiss start-up has changed all that with its new invention: FreezyBoy chills organic waste to -5°C and stops it from decomposing.
It is a familiar problem: if you collect organic household waste for recycling, it decomposes, which inevitably creates a strong odour and attracts fruit flies. That is why many people choose not to recycle their organic waste – instead, they put it in their ordinary waste bin or even flush it down the toilet. Environmentally speaking, this is far from ideal. But help is at hand: Lucerne-based start-up Avantyard has developed an effective solution to the problem, FreezyBoy.
Problem-free storage of organic waste for weeks – or even months
FreezyBoy is a unique cooling appliance that chills organic waste to -5°C and stops it from decomposing. There are no unpleasant odours, pests and germs cannot multiply and mould cannot grow. Thanks to FreezyBoy, food scraps and peelings can easily be stored in the kitchen for weeks at a time. FreezyBoy can be used alone or installed as a complete waste sorting system, Oeko FreezyBoy, which is available from peka.
The small company Avantyard was founded by three partners in 2015 and launched Switzerland’s most successful crowdfunding project ever to support the development of FreezyBoy. The result? The only solution of its kind in the world for handling organic kitchen waste. peka-metall AG, the market leader for user-friendly, ecologically designed waste sorting systems, backed the project right
from the outset. And so it is only fitting that peka will be the exclusive global distributor of the finished product, as the Oeko FreezyBoy waste system, from autumn 2017. The appliance itself is made by renowned Swiss appliance manufacturer V-Zug.
